[here is a list of some of what we’ve learned about care since we started Thick Press in 2017. Click on each phrase to see related content.]

An Inquiry into Care

the care in cleaning, wiping, carrying, listening, and being tired of listening

the care it takes to understand—because: everybody wants to be understood, but nobody wants to understand

the care in feeling your feelings

the care in validating another

the care you do with your own money, on your own time

the care in welcoming fuzzy conjecture

the care in sharing stories

the care in holding space

***

the care that happens because you showed up limber, you showed up relaxed

the care in performing grief rituals, in leaving space for grieving

the care in honoring collective memory

***

the care that is “green” because it isn’t rooted in extraction

the care in finding your slice of the work in social justice—and then attending to it

the care in radical hospitality

the care in radical accessibility

the care in gettin’ free across levels of systems and time

***

the care and protection that lie beyond critique

the care that’s meant to build power

the care in birthing a new world

the care it takes to grow for the sake of something bigger than us

the care in making beautiful things with others

A page from Recuerdos de Nuestro Pasado, by Angela Celaya, Sergio Guzmán, Jose Lovos, & Erin Segal
A snapshot of a page in a book with a green cover and yellow endpapers visible. Small type on the bottom of the page reads: “Recuerdos de Nuestro Pasado” and “101.” The text reads: Gloria: And that’s my story and here I’ve stayed. My children died, my sister, too. They’re buried here, at peace, and here I’ll stay until God wants me to give Him my life. I’ll keep on fighting, trying hard. And here I am, together with others in this Senior Center. I like this place. I do my exercises and I have friends. I like dancing, doing shows. I spend time with everybody here. We’ve shared all these stories and we’ve learned to know each other better. My daughter has two children who have graduated from the university, one who is studying. And we live with the great-grandchildren, too. I have my children and we all live together.
